The New Trend of Sustainable Tourism: Taoyuan City Department of Tourism Promotes the Green Mark Accommodation Certification
With global climate change and environmental protection issues increasingly highlighted, green tourism is recognized as an eco-friendly way to travel, leading to a gradual transformation of traditional tourism models. The Taoyuan City Government Department of Tourism is actively promoting sustainable tourism by creating comprehensive low-carbon environments through policy planning. Local accommodation providers are encouraged to join the eco-friendly lodging initiative, demonstrating corporate responsibility and committing to environmental protection. By recognizing accommodation providers with the green mark, Taoyuan aligns its sustainable tourism with international standards, inviting visitors to have a taste of a net-zero green lifestyle while making their travels more meaningful.

The First Step in Sustainable Tourism: Taoyuan Promotes Green Accommodation
In recent years, more and more travelers are choosing environmentally friendly ways to plan their trips, thereby reducing resource consumption during travel. Accommodation plays a crucial role in this, which is why the Taoyuan City Department of Tourism actively assists local hotels and B&Bs in obtaining the green mark certification. Currently, Taoyuan City has 84 green hotels and 18 green mark-certified hotels, the highest number among the six municipalities in Taiwan.
The Director of the Taoyuan Department of Tourism explained the difference between "green hotels" and "green label-certified hotels." Green hotels do not offer disposable amenities to guests up-front, thereby reducing waste generation. They also offer discounts and other incentives to encourage consumers to support green actions. This category has simpler requirements and is more about encouragement. On the other hand, green mark-certified hotels must undergo rigorous standard reviews and certification by the Environmental Protection Administration to qualify. The Taoyuan City Department of Tourism will continue to provide guidance and encouragement for green hotels to obtain the green mark in the future. It is hoped that more accommodation providers will respond to the initiative and jointly implement net-zero carbon emissions and sustainable operations, providing more green accommodation options for visitors

Reducing Single-Use Items in Partnership with Consumers and Businesses to Promote Sustainable Tourism
In addition, the Department of Tourism aims to achieve a win-win goal of environmental protection and sustainable growth in tourism and entertainment through policy incentives and industry business models. Along with the active promotion of "green hotel" and "green mark-certified hotel" certifications among accommodation providers, they are also restricting the use of single-use hotel amenities. This gradual adjustment aims to change consumer habits. Since 2022, Taoyuan has launched the "No Amenities, Get a $100 Voucher" campaign. Guests who bring their own toiletries and stay at green hotels in Taoyuan can receive a limited $100 voucher for use at local convenience stores. Furthermore, plans are underway to form cross-industry alliances between suppliers of eco-friendly products (such as biodegradable packaging, zero-carbon or organic cleaning products, and refillable amenities) and Taoyuan accommodations. This initiative aims to create a sustainable tourism environment that benefits both consumers and businesses.

Choosing eco-friendly accommodations is a key aspect of sustainable tourism. Taoyuan City invites travelers to experience the local culture and rich ecological environment through green tourism. Visitors can enjoy their travels while actively contributing to environmental protection efforts for the benefit of our planet.
